Ultimate cheap cold frame/greenhouse

image

For using windows they found lying around from homes in the neighborhood getting torn down the end result looks great.  Functional and doing some serious reduce/reuse/recycle in the process.

Adding windows to the top would be nice, but sure finding the right ones for a weatherproof fit could be difficult.

That’s the one!We have a Habitat For Humanity store in town and they always have windows and doors for very cheap (like $5 per each) and I knew there was something I could do with them and now I know! Thanks for posting this.

That greenhouse is AWESOME! I need to start collecting old windows. I just hope they don’t all cost me $450 like the first two I saved (replaced one in the house).

I wish I was good at building. Thats so cool. Thats a great way to save money and keep the windows out of the landfill.

David, that is a great idea I know we have one of those around here as well. Think the trick is finding the right sizes. With enough selection could make one entirely out sliding glass doors with everyone replacing theirs for French style.jimmycrackedcorn, how is the greenhouse you created holding up?Patrice, construction does look too bad. No careful measurements, if things don’t line up just put some extra caulking between them. You should be able to assemble one of these just using screws and brackets.

    That’s brilliant!

Very interesting and cool. I have a bunc of old windows I’m planning on using to make a greenhouse. I love this look!

Matron, well someone else’s brilliance, I am just the messenger :)Chiot’s Run, I have an old screen door (with windows) but that’s about it so pretty far away on construction. Well that and not a place to put it in my small yard.

Have to say that looks great! It’s maybe not easy for the everyone to get their hands on so many spare windows but the general message of resourcefulness and reuse definitely applies to us all.

I think this one looks awesome!
I am curious though, if anyone has run into trouble with their local governments and code requirements when it come to homemade greenhouses? I’d hate to put all the time into construction only to have the inspector come knocking on the door saying I had to take it down.

Use caution using old wood windows , if they are older than 1980 there may be lead in the paint , dust or chips if they are in that condition

children under 6 are most susceptible to lead hazards
