I came across this interesting infographic showing pretty cool information about the home gardener I thought I would share. I couple of interesting items were the average garden size and the economics of U.S. food gardens.

Great graphic, it is interesting to see how popular tomatoes are. I especially love the green thumb images, haha.

You can see as the economy gets worse more people are growing their own vegetables.
Another factor could be food safety. When growing your own food you know exactly how it was grown and also how it was handled after the harvest.
Why not become self sufficient and start your own backyard vegetable garden.

Wow, thanks for posting that! It was really interesting to do some personal figuring and comparing. I did read that you get more of a “dollar return” if you grow some fruit. I’m thinking raspberries, rhubarb, and strawberries are saving us some real money.

I reckon you could chart the general economy against growing vegetables! Interesting to see the rise in the number of people growing their own from 2008 to 2009. I wonder if it’ll dip again when things pick up.

David, I would be curious of that as well. Though seeing quite a bit more PSA about buying/growing locally when my kids are watching TV so might be same additional variables causing this increase.

Wonder if there’s a similar map for the UK? I read that people are taking to gardening at a much earlier age than before. I’ve recently doubled my veg patch and will be self-sufficient throughout the Summer and into Winter. Lots of folks around me in Yorkshire are doing the same. Ironically, we might all be eating better and healthier because of the economic downturn! Makes you think, doesn’t it?
